September 13, 2002 Day of Caring

Great news!  Not only did we have a fantastically successful Day of Caring work party, bolstered by help from 40 employees of Bank of America and Microsoft, we will have three projects by UW student teams of Sustainable Community Landscapes.

The Day of Caring work was to clear ivy and blackberries from Design Site #3, at the corner of 31stS and S King St.  Amazingly, in four hours we cleared 95%, so that we are now nearly ready for terracing and other soil retainage and planting to take place this Fall/early Winter.  Thanks especially to Liz Cross for the superb scones and other baked delicacies that helped us with inspiration from the start!  At lunch, Bank of America and Microsoft treated us to pizza, thank you!.

Sustainable Community Landscapes will provide us three interdisciplinary teams this semester.  Two teams will design -- the Caretakers Cottage area and a section of Lake Washington Boulevard just north of the Yesler Cable Car bridge.
The third team will provide most of the labor to install plants at Design Site #3.  We will also have a crew from the Student Conservation Corps construct a short trail at the corner of 31 and S King.  Judging from the experience of installing Design Site #2, 32nd and S King, there will be plenty of work for neighborhood volunteers during the planting phase.

Rest assured, there is plenty of work left for us Friends of Frinkers.  We have continuing maintenance responsibilities for the habitat restoration areas plus removing tree ivy and other invasive plants from the rest of the park.
